Procedure (Pre-Construction)

Pre-construction Activities

∙ Remove all wooden pieces, concrete debris, plastic strips, tree stump roots, deleterious materials etc. ∙ The soil shall be leveled and compacted if in case bottom of the blinding before treatment starts. ∙ All construction related tests shall be approved by the Engineer prior to treatment.

Construction Activities

∙ After the advice of the Engineer to proceed, the application shall immediately begin by first preparing and mixing the solutions of Approved Anti-termite material diluted with water at a rate of 1:19 Liter water as per manufacture/ recommendation.

∙ A solution of approved Anti-termite material diluted with water at a rate of 1:19 Liter shall be sprayed prior to casting of blinding of footing or any foundation type with the application rate of 4 to 5 liter per square meter.

∙ The treated area shall then be covered with polythene sheet, it can be opened free until 2 hours, and then casting can be started. Casting must be completed by 2 to 24 hours after the Anti-termite application.

∙ Sack fills the sides up to the top level of the proposed foundation (considering that the right of the foundation will exceed more than 11 meter).

∙ Make a trench with 350mm width by 150mm depth along the perimeter of the foundation.

∙ A solution of Approved Anti-termite material diluted with water at a rate of 1:19 Liter shall be sprayed with an application rate of 5 -6 Liter per linear meter in the trench along the perimeter of the foundation.

∙ The trench shall be back filled within 24 hours of treatment.

Prior to Construction

Where termites are detected on site, they should be eradicated by a licensed pest controller. Site preparation and earthworks should, where possible, eradicate termite nests or colonies.

Construction close to/on boundaries

For buildings that are constructed close to or on allotment boundaries, due to restricted access, it may not be possible to maintain or properly inspect physical or chemical termite management systems. For this type of construction, the most appropriate and efficient termite management option is the use of termite resistant materials, including termite treated softwood framing and EWP’s for floor, wall and roof framing.

During Construction

For termite resistant timbers apply standard timber building practice in accordance with AS1684. For termite management systems install physical or chemical management systems in accordance with the NCC-BCA and AS 3660.1. Refer Figures 3, 4 and 5. Notes: (i) Chemical management systems must be installed by licensed pest control operators. (ii) Physical management systems and reticulated chemical systems must be installed by licensed installers. (iii) As well as under slab treatment, AS 3660.1 also requires perimeter protection of the building which must be capped in Queensland. Ensure physical management systems are not damaged by various trades people. Remove all formwork, form boards, profiles, pegs, etc. near or under foundations or slabs. Vegetation and timber products should not be included in any backfill. Use termite resistant timber for timber in contact with the ground, i.e. Durability Class 1 timber or timber treated to “H5” level. Once formed, the system should not be bridged or breached by construction, e.g. carports, paving, trellises, annexes, installation of underground telephone cables, landscaping or gardening. Where such projects are intended, or have occurred, action must be taken to maintain or to restore the integrity of the barrier system. Ensure weep holes or joints in brickwork are not covered by soil or other landscaping materials.

Oriental cockroach (Blatta orientalis) Males are approximately 25mm long, females approximately 32mm long; shiny and very dark brown, nearly black in appearance, nymphs (immature) may be reddish brown; they are poor climbers on smooth surfaces, which may limit their distribution within a building; they appear to be cold tolerant in that they are often found outside buildings, in drains, gardens, sewers, external brickwork etc, a factor which should be remembered when controlling them.

German cockroach (Blattella germanica) Adult size 13-16mm; the adult is light brown in color with two dark almost parallel longitudinal stripes on their pronotal shield; they are found throughout buildings but show a preference for warm humid areas; they are good climbers, being able to climb vertical glass or tiled surfaces; an infestation of these cockroaches can be quickly established once they have entered any premises.

Brown-banded cockroach (Supella longipalpa) Adult size 11-15mm; this cockroach is small, light brown in color and is often mistaken for the German cockroach; this cockroach needs hot conditions to survive, it prefers 27°C and over but it is becoming more common as a pest in the UK; it is typically found in light switches, electrical appliances, motor housings, etc.

American cockroach (Periplaneta americana) Adult size 34-53mm; the adult is is reddish brown in colour and is fully winged. Male wings extend beyond the tip of the abdomen; female wings do not. There is a pale brown to yellowish band around the edges of the pronotum. This species is not well established in Britain. It is not as cold tolerant as Blatta orientalis and Blattella germanica. Typical infestations in the United Kingdom are port areas, where it is introduced via ships. Sites infested include food premises, greenhouses, zoos, large centrally heated humid environments, etc.

Australian cockroach (Periplaneta australasiae) Adult size 25-35 mm; Adults are reddish brown, fully winged with a yellow to pale brown band around the pronotum and a yellow streak on the outer edge of the base of the front wings. Late instar nymphs have pale yellow markings on the lateral margins of the thorax and abdomen. This species closely resembles Periplaneta americana. Not yet widely established in the United Kingdom, it requires hot, moist conditions to survive. It is found in greenhouses; therefore potted plants may be a source of infestation. Pet shops, particularly those with large numbers of heated fish tanks, can also be a source of infestation for this species.

Egg case (oothecae) development in cockroaches

Oriental cockroach (Blatta orientalis) The female Oriental cockroaches carry the oothecae for about 30 hours, after which time she deposits them, dropping or attaching them near to a food source. General Biology and Behavior

Cockroaches are omnivorous. In addition to conventional foodstuffs, they will feed on a wide range of organic matter including other cockroaches. Their activity peaks during hours of darkness. They exhibit incomplete metamorphosis; the juvenile stages or nymphs resemble the adults. Each cockroach molts several times in its life cycle producing a larger nymph and eventually molting to the adult stage. Bedbug Treatment

Bed bugs are parasitic insects of the cimicid family that feed exclusively on blood. Cimex lectularius, the common bed bug, is the best known as it prefers to feed on human blood. Other Cimex species specialize in other animals, e.g., bat bugs, such as Cimex pipistrelli (Europe), Cimex pilosellus (western US), and Cimex adjunctus (entire eastern US). Infestation

Diagnosis of an infestation involves both finding bed bugs and the occurrence of compatible symptoms. Bed bug bites or cimicosis may lead to a range of skin manifestations from no visible effects to prominent blisters. Effects include skin rashes, psychological effects, and allergic symptoms. Although bed bugs can be infected with at least 28 human pathogens, no studies have found that the insects are capable of transmitting any of these to humans. They have been found with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and with vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VRE), but the significance of this is still unknown. Investigations into potential transmission of HIV, MRSA, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and hepatitis E have not shown that bed bugs can spread these diseases. However, arboviruses may be transmissible.

Life stages

Bed bugs have five immature nymph life stages and a final sexually mature adult stage. They shed their skins through ecdysis at each stage, discarding their outer exoskeleton, which are somewhat clear, empty exoskeletons of the bugs themselves. Bed bugs must molt six times before becoming fertile adults, and must consume at least one blood meal to complete each molt. Each of the immature stages lasts about a week, depending on temperature and the availability of food, and the complete lifecycle can be completed in as little as two months (rather long compared to other ecto-parasites). Fertilized females with enough food lay three to four eggs each day continually until the end of their lifespans (about nine months under warm conditions), possibly generating as many as 500 eggs in this time. Genetic analysis has shown that a single pregnant bed bug, possibly a single survivor of eradication, can be responsible for an entire infestation over a matter of weeks, rapidly producing generations of offspring.

In Bangladesh, there are two species of rat; the Norway or brown rat (Rattus norvegicus) and the ship or black rat (Rattus rattus). The Norway rat has largely replaced the ship rat over the past 100 years. Norway rats eat on average one tenth of their body weight each day. They are considered vomnivorous 21 but if available, cereals are preferred. Rats must drink water daily unless the food source is extremely moist. Fumigation Services

Fumigation is a method of pest control that completely fills an area with gaseous pesticides—or fumigants—to suffocate or poison the pests within. It is used to control pests in buildings (structural fumigation), soil, grain, and produce, and is also used during processing of goods to be imported or exported to prevent transfer of exotic organisms. This method also affects the structure itself, affecting pests that inhabit the physical structure, such as woodborers and dry wood termites.

Process

Fumigation generally involves the following phases: First the area intended to be fumigated is usually covered to create a sealed environment; next the fumigant is released into the space to be fumigated; then, the space is held for a set period while the fumigant gas percolates through the space and acts on and kills any infestation in the product, next the space is ventilated so that the poisonous gases are allowed to escape from the space, and render it safe for humans to enter. Tent Fumigation (Tenting)

Structural fumigation techniques differ from building to building, but in houses a rubber (usually the tent is made of plastic\pvc coated canvas material) tent(s) are often placed over the entire house while the pesticides are being released into the vacant residence. This process is called tent fumigation or “tenting”. The sealed tent concentrates the poisonous gases and prevents them from escaping into the neighborhood. The process can take up to a week depending on the fumigant used, which is in turn dependent on the temperature and the pest.

Mites are small arthropods belonging to the the class Arachnida and the subclass Acari (also known as Acarina). The term “mite” refers to the members of several groups in Acari but it is not a precise scientific taxon and excludes the ticks, order Ixodida. The scientific discipline devoted to the study of ticks and mites is called acarology.

Most mites are tiny, less than 1 mm (0.04 in) in length, and have a simple, unsegmented body plan. Some species live in water, many live in soil as decomposers, others live on plants, sometimes creating galls, while others again are predators or parasites. Flea

Fleas are small flightless insects that form the order Siphonaptera. As external parasites of mammals and birds, they live by consuming the blood of their hosts. Adults are up to about 3 mm (0.12 in) long and usually brown. Bodies flattened sideways enable them to move through their host’s fur or feathers; strong claws prevent them from being dislodged. They lack wings, and have mouthparts adapted for piercing skin and sucking blood and hind legs adapted for jumping. The latter enable them to leap a distance of some 50 times their body length, a feat second only to jumps made by froghoppers. Larvae are worm-like with no limbs; they have chewing mouthparts and feed on organic debris.

Over 2,500 species of fleas have been described worldwide. The Siphonaptera are most closely related to the snow scorpionflies (Boreidae), placing them within the endopterygote insect order Mecoptera.

Fleas arose in the early Cretaceous, most likely as ectoparasites of mammals, before moving on to other groups including birds. Each species of flea is more or less a specialist on its host animal species: many species never breed on any other host, though some are less selective. Some families of fleas are exclusive to a single host group: for example, the Malacopsyllidae are found only on armadillos, the Ischnopsyllidae only on bats, and the Chimaeropsyllidae only on elephant shrews. The oriental rat flea, Xenopsylla cheopis, is a vector of Yersinia pestis, the bacteriumwhich causes bubonic plague. The disease was spread by rodents such as the black rat, which were bitten by fleas that then infected humans. Major outbreaks included the Plague of Justinian and the Black Death, both of which killed a sizeable fraction of the world’s population.

Plaster Bug Treatment

The plaster bagworm is a small larva that creates a case from silk and debris, like soil, lint and paint fragments to help camouflage the case. This protects it from predators as it matures inside. Plaster bagworms are also known by the name household casebearer.

Plaster bagworms are household pests as they feed on wool and silk. They will eat the webs of spiders as well. The plaster bagworms can be identified by the cases they build. They resemble pumpkin seeds in that they are wide in the middle and tapered on the ends. This allows the larva to turn around inside the case.

These cases are easily seen on light-colored walls and can be found mainly in closets. Plaster bagworms may also be found near baseboards, under chairs and on the edges of rugs. These pests are typically found in the southeastern region of the Bangladesh.

Plaster bagworm moths are small and gray, with distinct dark spots and long, gray hairs on their hind wings. The adult moths of the species do not appear to feed. The female moths will deposit up to 200 tiny, light-blue eggs in a hidden area to keep them safe while they mature. Once the larvae hatch, they spin a case of silk and coat it with debris to protect them. The plaster bagworms will travel with the case dragging behind them as they seek out food. These insects will pupate inside the case.

Keeping your home free of spider webs and cobwebs can help control plaster bagworms. Store your clothing only after it has been cleaned and inspect your closet regularly, especially where items are stored for long periods of time. Plaster bagworms will only feed on the fibers of silk and wool. They do not eat cotton fibers.

Centipede & Millipede Control

Millipedes are a group of arthropods that are characterised by having two pairs of jointed legs on most body segments; they are known scientifically as the classDiplopoda, the name being derived from this feature. Each double-legged segment is a result of two single segments fused together. Most millipedes have very elongated cylindrical or flattened bodies with more than 20 segments, while pill millipedes are shorter and can roll into a ball. Although the name “millipede” derives from the Latinfor “thousand feet”, no known species has 1,000; the record of 750 legs belongs to Illacme plenipes. There are approximately 12,000 named species classified into 16 orders and around 140 families, making Diplopoda the largest class of myriapods, an arthropod group which also includes centipedes and other multi-legged creatures.

Most millipedes are slow-moving detritivores, eating decaying leaves and other dead plant matter. Some eat fungi or suck plant fluids, and a small minority are predatory. Millipedes are generally harmless to humans, although some can become household or garden pests, especially in greenhouses where they can cause severe damage to emergent seedlings. Most millipedes defend themselves with a variety of chemicals secreted from pores along the body, although the tiny bristle millipedes are covered with tufts of detachable bristles. Reproduction in most species is carried out by modified male legs called gonopods, which transfer packets of sperm to females.

First appearing in the Silurian period, millipedes are some of the oldest known land animals. Centipedes (from Latin prefix centi-, “hundred”, and pes, pedis, “foot“) are arthropodsbelonging to the class Chilopoda of the subphylum Myriapoda, an arthropod group which also includes Millipedes and other multi-legged creatures. Centipedes are elongated metameric creatures with one pair of legs per body segment. Centipedes are known to be highly venomous, and often inject paralyzing venom. Despite the name, centipedes can have a varying number of legs, ranging from 30 to 354. Their size can range from a few millimetres in the smaller lithobiomorphs and geophilomorphs to about 30 cm (12 in) in the largest scolopendromorphs. Centipedes can be found in a wide variety of environments. They normally have a drab coloration combining shades of brown and red. Cavernicolous (cave-dwelling) and subterranean species may lack pigmentation, and many tropical scolopendromorphs have bright aposematic colours.

Worldwide, an estimated 8,000 species of centipedes are thought to exist,^[5] of which 3,000 have been described. Centipedes have a wide geographical range, where they even reach beyond the Arctic Circle.^[4] They are found in an array of terrestrial habitats from tropical rainforests to deserts. Within these habitats, centipedes require a moist microhabitat because they lack the waxy cuticle of insects and arachnids, therefore causing them to rapidly lose water.^[6] Accordingly, they are found in soil and leaf litter, under stones and dead wood, and inside logs. Centipedes are among the largest terrestrial invertebrate predators, and often contribute significantly to the invertebrate predatory biomass in terrestrial ecosystems. Only one species, Scolopendra cataracta, is known to be amphibious and is believed to hunt aquatic or amphibious invertebrates.
